It’s Time to Hit the Books
Early aviation had few rules and regulations – they didn’t seem necessary. It took aircrews many years to apply the foibles of human factors and subsequently create losses. Oh, it’s true that early technology machines munched up many and contributed to elevated accident numbers. However, with time, mechanical malfunctions became relatively rare. Meanwhile, pilot error and the increasing loss of lives drew attention from the legislators and a mountain of flying regulations resulted.

Eyes in the Sky
It’s 1:30 a.m. The police radio crackles with a report of a burglary in progress, and the pair of peace officers immediately accelerates through the night to arrive on the scene. But there’s something special about this scenario: they’re in a helicopter flying at 1,500 feet above the city . . . and that gives them a speed, manoeuvrability and situational-awareness advantage that no squad car on the street can match. Within minutes, they’re over the scene, co-ordinating the response by police ground units.

Safety-Based Culture
Putting their money where their mouths are: That’s what the industry/government members of the International Helicopter Safety Team (IHST) have done. At the International Helicopter Safety Symposium (IHSS) 2009 held in Montreal at the end of September, IHST members released three “toolkits” designed to aid operators in achieving safer flights, and updated statistics on the causes of and possible remedies for U.S. helicopter accidents.

Editorial: Fire and Rain
The results of a recent Helicopters magazine poll at www.helicoptersmagazine.com show that almost 30 per cent of respondents are having a better year than they expected. That sounds positive; but it also means that the other 70 per cent are experiencing pretty much what they thought would happen, or worse. And, as we entered 2009, Canadian helicopter operators were not particularly optimistic.

Dixon: Countdown to 2010
Query “black hole” and “Vancouver 2010” on Google and stand back. You may be as surprised as I was to see how often that term is used in reference to the 2010 Games in Vancouver, from mainstream media to the outer fringes, though the responses “black hole more massive than imagined” do refer to an actual celestial object and not the 2010 Games in Vancouver.

Aerial Firefighting
Some years are especially challenging for Canada’s aerial firefighters. No one can predict whether 2009 will be one of them – how many wildfires will occur and how weather conditions will affect efforts to fight them. But government forest protection agencies and aircraft operators must prepare in advance for whatever the coming fire season will throw at them. This is a major undertaking involving hundreds of people and millions of dollars worth of aircraft and equipment.

Editorial: What’s in a Word?
An assignment or a mission – does it really matter what we call it? After all, we do the same things anyway, right? Maybe not. Increasingly, there are voices in the aviation community who believe that making a distinction is important.

Countdown to 2010
It snowed in Vancouver on April Fool’s Day. The spring bulbs and cherry blossoms that we in Lotus Land take such glee in flaunting in front of the rest of Canada are long delayed this year. The hummingbirds are late returning from Mexico and the Arctic birds that overwinter here are late in heading north. It’s as though our entire world is slowing down, not just the economy.

Precision Flying at Kootenay Valley
Nestled in the mountains of southeastern B.C., the Kootenay Valley is both ruggedly beautiful and, from a flying perspective, highly challenging. The combination of high altitude flying, harsh winters and hot summers brings out the best in a helicopter pilot, at least those who are the best at the job.

What’s the Cost?
Virtually all aviators want improved flying safety and survivability – but at what cost? The new regulation requiring installation of 406 Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELTs) in almost all Canadian aircraft may seem like a good safety measure.

Countdown to 2010 April 2009
February 12, 2009 is a special day in Vancouver with the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics now only 365 days away. This is the final countdown. Countdown to 2010
December 2008 saw the opening of Whistler’s Peak 2 Peak gondola, an engineering marvel of unprecedented scale that connects the peaks of the two mountains, Whistler and Blackcombe, 4.4 kilometres apart. The gondola is a fitting metaphor for the last lap to the finish line of Olympic preparations – a high-wire balancing act under extreme conditions.

Protect Yourself
How old is the helicopter you’re flying? If you are like most of us, you probably fly a helicopter that was produced a couple of decades ago. I have flown the Bell 47, the Hughes 500, the Sikorsky 76 and the Robinson 44.  Only one of those types is younger than my adult daughter!

Hope for the Best
Across the Canadian helicopter industry, 2007 and most of 2008 were stellar years. Business was booming and many operators found themselves scrambling to keep up with the demands on their physical and human resources. There weren’t always enough aircraft available, and pilot and maintenance engineer shortages compounded the situation

Countdown to 2010: July/August/September 2008
As the Beijing 2008 Olympics approach, we are becoming more and more aware of the challenges that Olympic event organizers have to overcome. The Beijing Torch Relay garnered widespread media attention for all the wrong reasons. It faced disruptions and protest at nearly every public outing, not to mention the embarrassment it caused the Chinese government. And although the motives behind the disturbances are unlikely to affect Canada’s time in the spotlight at the 2010 Winter Olympics, it is an important lesson in the significance of proper planning for times when things don’t go as planned.
