March 24, 2008, Chicago - Northstar Aerospace Inc., a Canadian-American aircraft equipment and repair company, has won a US$14 million contract from the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command to manufacture transmissions for the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter. The contract, announced Monday, comes after the army exercised an earlier option on the equipment under a separate 2006 deal with Northstar. Northstar said it is building the transmissions at its Chicago plant, with support from other company operations. Deliveries on the original contract award begin late this year. Deliveries on the optional contract are slated to begin in 2009. "The conversion of the option to purchase additional transmissions further validates Northstar's strategy to become a leading subcontractor to the U.S. military,'' said Harry Schmink, president of Northstar's fears and transmission operations. ``We are also supplying maintenance, repair and overhaul, as well as, spares for the Apache. In addition, we provide maintenance, repair and overhaul as well as spares for the CH-47 Chinook helicopter and retrofit wheel brake kits used on Light Armored Vehicles.'' Northstar, which had 786 employees at the end of 2006, makes helicopter gears and transmissions, accessory gearbox assemblies, rotorcraft drive systems and other machined and fabricated parts. The company also provides maintenance, repair and overhaul of helicopter engines and transmissions and has U.S. plants in Chicago, Phoenix, Ariz.; Stroud, Okla.; Anderson, Ind. In Canada, the company has plants in Milton, northwest of Toronto, and Windsor, in southwestern Ontario. |
