Aug. 25, 2009 – The 50th anniversary of the legendary SEA KING™ helicopter will be celebrated during the 12th Annual International SEA KING Maintenance Symposium. Operators of the aircraft, owners, pilots, maintenance personnel and others from throughout the world will gather for technical and informational sessions, networking, and fun including a dinner with keynote speaker Sergei Sikorsky, son of Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation founder Igor Sikorsky.

When: September 1-3, 2009

Where: The Omni Hotel,155 Temple St., New Haven, Conn.

Background: The first prototype SEA KING helicopter flew in March 1959 after Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. developed the aircraft for the U.S. Navy to use in detecting and destroying enemy submarines.  Since that time, military services throughout the world have employed the helicopters.  Today, approximately 350 SEA KING and S-61™ commercial helicopter variants continue to operate in more than 20 nations.

The helicopters have earned a reputation for ruggedness and survivability under harsh environmental and war conditions. SEA KING helicopters perform a variety of military missions including troop and cargo transport, as well as search and rescue. The commercial variants are used for general transport, firefighting, lifting, and other missions. A modernization program is under way to keep the venerable aircraft in service.

More information about the symposium is available by accessing the “Events” tab at www.sikorsky.com.
