Drone use being closely monitored by Saskatoon politicians

July 23, 2015  By The Star Phoenix

Saskatoon will need to continue to monitor rules governing drone aircraft as technology evolves, a city councillor says.

Council’s transportation committee voted unanimously on Tuesday to deny a request by Draganfly Innovations Inc., to fly small commercial drones over City of Saskatoon property whenever needed. The committee also voted in favour of amending the parks bylaw to prohibit the use of drones in public parks without the city’s permission.

However, Coun. Charlie Clark warned the municipal government will have to keep pace with advancements in drone technology. Clark used the example of small toy helicopters equipped with cameras patrolling people’s backyards, where they might expect privacy.
