Transport Canada to examine options for FDR, CVR

Transport Canada is examining the need to make regulatory changes over the use of flight data recorders and voice recorders on aircraft.
The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, issued the following statement yesterday on the topic:
“The safety and security of Canadians is the government’s top priority and we take all Transportation Safety Board (TSB) recommendations very seriously.
“I’ve instructed Transport Canada officials to look into expanding requirements for the use of flight data and cockpit voice recorders on aircraft that don’t currently require them. Over the past 20 years, there have been significant developments in technology that are more cost-effective and these options will be explored. I’ve also asked departmental officials to examine the regulatory framework to see what can be implemented. I’ve asked the department to report their findings to me in the coming months.
“The use of flight data and cockpit voice recorders would assist investigators in determining the cause of accidents and how to prevent them in the future.”
Garneau’s statement comes shortly after the Oct. 13 crash of a Cessna Citation north of Kelowna, B.C. that took the lives four people, including former Alberta premier Jim Prentice.
