Pilot killed in crash near Drayton Valley, Alta.

Oct. 6, 2011, Drayton Valley, Alta. - One person is dead after a helicopter crash Wednesday night near Drayton Valley.


Emergency services in Drayton Valley, 133 kilometres southwest of Edmonton, received a call shortly before 7 p.m. that a helicopter went down southeast of the Drayton Valley Municipal Airport.

Drayton Valley RCMP Staff Sgt. Brian Jones said police had confirmed the pilot, the lone occupant of the helicopter, was killed in the crash.

RCMP on Wednesday night were confirming the pilot’s identity and notifying the family. Jones said through the course of the initial investigation police believe the flight originated from Whitecourt, Alta.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada will conduct the investigation into the crash and Jones said local RCMP were securing the scene until the arrival of the TSB.

While few details were being released, Jones said there were witnesses to the crash.

“We’re speaking to a number of people,” he said.
