Sweet Helicopters topped its previous record for charter passengers flown to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, known as The Brickyard. More than 450 people turned to Sweet Helicopters to help them beat race day traffic. Last year, the helicopter operator transported 350 people to and from the Indianapolis 500.

Guests could depart from one of four locations in the Indianapolis metro area. Pilots would then fly passengers over the ground traffic, landing outside turn two of the racetrack for the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500.

“The Indianapolis 500 is considered the greatest spectacle in racing,” said Tim Edmonds, Vice President of Aviation, Sweet Helicopters. “We believe visitors shouldn’t have to navigate through slow, dense traffic to experience the high-speed, adrenaline-pumping action of the big race.”

Sweet Helicopters has served as the official helicopter service provider for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 2017.

“Sunday’s storms and rain delays posed a significant challenge, but we anticipated that and adapted well,” said Bob Bailey, Director of Business Development, Sweet Helicopters. “No one who booked with us was left waiting for a ride. We efficiently flew in every single passenger prior to the IMS grandstand closure, at which point we relocated our nine helicopters to outlying airports to avoid the approaching lightning.”

The helicopter rotors began spinning again as soon as it was safe to do so, explained the company, chartering passengers back to their initial pickup locations post-race. “It was a long day for our team,” said Bailey. “But they all did a magnificent job of accommodating every passenger’s needs.”
