Tampa Police Department selects Becker Avionics

February 22, 2016  By Becker Avionics

Becker Avionics has announced the Tampa Police Department has selected the Becker DVCS Digital Audio System for use by their airborne law enforcement operation.

“We are extremely excited that Tampa Police Department has selected Becker Avionics for its digital communications needs,” said Luis Gonzalez, Vice President with Becker. “Tampa is one of the original airborne law enforcement operations and to be included on their platforms is truly an hhonour”

Tampa Police Department began airborne law enforcement operations in 1969 with the purchase of two Hughes 300 helicopters and a Piper Cub. Originally, there were three people assigned to the aviation operation. The unit has grown in size as the city has grown so that now twelve full-time officers, a full-time maintenance staff and administrative support are assigned, making them one of the many truly professional operations ongoing. The unit provides 24/7 support to the City of Tampa and mutual aid response to the surrounding agencies.

Becker Avionics will provide the Digital Voice Communication System (DVCS) for the aircraft. The Becker DVCS provides many advantages over analogue systems. The DVCS provides access to 8 communication channels (expandable up to 16), 8 navigation channels and remote capability for to up to 6 pilots/operators and up to 12 passengers. The crystal clear communications are well beyond that achievable with analogue systems.

The system is fully programmable by the aircraft operators allowing each DVCS system to be configured specifically to that unit’s needs without any additional wiring, switches or other modifications. Adding or removing function to the system, new radios or any configuration change can be done simply thru a provided computer program.
