The Headset Visor

Dec. 1, 2009 – The HSV solves the problems of using headsets and
sunglasses together by being comfortable, effective and functional.

The Problems
Comfort- Headsets and sunglasses are worn on the head, face and ears, which are sensitive parts of the body.  Wearing a headset, together with sunglasses, creates discomfort as the headset pushes the arms of the sunglasses onto the ears and head, and the sunglasses rest on the bridge of the nose for long periods of time.

Headset effectiveness – While wearing sunglasses, the arms of the sunglasses break the seal of the headset cushions around the ear.  This allows noise to leak through, reducing the effective noise reduction of the headset.  This is true whether the headsets are passive or have noise cancelling capabilities.

Utility – Often when flying, the brightness of the sun changes.  It may be overcast at the start of the flight, but once up at altitude, there is bright sunshine.  When the brightness changes, the sunglasses must be removed or put on, which at worst involves removing the headset.

The Solutions
Comfort – During its use, no part of the HSV touches the face, ears or head, while continuing to provide all the protection and advantages of wearing sunglasses.  It is light-weight enough not to create any additional fatigue.

Headset effectiveness – The seals of the headset cushion are not broken as the HSV mounts to the headset itself.  This allows the headset to remain 100% effective.

Utility – When there is a change to the brightness of the sunlight, the HSV is simply lowered or raised as required.
