Honeywell to expand in P.E.I

Sept. 25, 2008, Charlottetown, P.E.I – Honeywell is adding 12 new positions at its facility at Slemon Park, P.E.I.

Richard Brown, Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning, welcomed news of the expansion and said aerospace is one of the key sectors in the Government of Prince Edward Island’s new economic development strategy, Island Prosperity: A Focus For Change.

“The expansion at Honeywell sends a strong signal that Prince Edward Island’s aerospace industry is thriving within a competitive global marketplace,” said Minister Brown. “As one of the fastest growing industries in the province, aerospace employs a significant number of people leading to millions of dollars in economic spinoffs for the provincial economy. This emerging sector shows how companies can partner with government toward a common goal of moving our economy forward.”

Prince Edward Island is home to Honeywell’s Centre of Excellence for Fuel Controls Repair and Overhaul for North America. The facility at Slemon Park, near Summerside, currently employs approximately 100 people. The company is eligible to apply for existing labour rebate programs through PEI Business Development Inc.

Minister Brown added that as a result of recent changes to the Department of Innovation and Advanced Learning, government is able to work closely with industry leaders and post secondary schools to prepare for the challenges and opportunities within our growing economy.

“Prince Edward Island employees are capable of meeting the demands in innovative sectors such as aerospace,” he said. “Furthermore, our Government is committed to developing programs and services to ensure companies have access to a dedicated and highly skilled labour force. The Island’s labour force is also a key selling feature when attracting new companies to the province.”

Aerospace is quickly becoming one of Prince Edward Island’s fastest-growing industries providing a diverse range of equipment repair, electronics, interiors and engineering services to clients around the world. The industry employs approximately 850 skilled workers and accounts for 25% of international exports for the province. PEI aerospace companies have annual sales of approximately $287 million.
