Pilot who negligence caused fatal plane crash in Winnipeg to be sentenced today

March 19, 2008, Winnipeg – A commercial pilot whose negligence caused a fatal
plane crash in Winnipeg is to be sentenced today.

Calgary-based Mark Tayfel was convicted last year of criminal
negligence causing death, four counts of criminal negligence causing
bodily harm and one count of dangerous operation of an aircraft.

Tayfel was piloting a small twin-engine plane that ran out of
fuel and crash-landed at a busy Winnipeg intersection.

All seven people onboard survived the crash initially, but one
man, 79-year-old Chester Jones, died a few weeks later from his
injuries.

Tayfel blamed the crash on faulty fuel gauges.

But a Court of Queen's Bench judge ruled Tayfel failed to ensure
the plane had enough fuel.
