AFS Obtains Canadian STC for Eurocopter EC130 B4 and Dual Hydraulic AS350B3 Inlet Barrier Filter

February 10, 2009  By Corrie

Feb. 10, 2009 – Aerospace Filtration Systems, Inc. has received an STC from Transport Canada for an Inlet Barrier Filter system for the EC130 B4 and AS350B3 helicopters with dual hydraulic systems installed.

Feb. 10, 2009 – Aerospace Filtration Systems, Inc. (AFS) has received a Supplemental
Type Certificate (STC) from Transport Canada (TC) for an Inlet Barrier
Filter (IBF) system for the Eurocopter EC130 B4 and Eurocopter AS350B3
helicopters with dual hydraulic systems installed. The approval clears
the way for Canadian Eurocopter operators to maximize engine protection
while reaping performance and maintenance benefits from proven AFS
technology.  European EASA approval is also in process, extending the
AFS IBF solution to more operators.

AFS Inlet Barrier Filter systems are already in use by AS350 and EC130
operators worldwide, performing law enforcement, air medical,
firefighting, news gathering and utility missions.

“This important Transport Canada certification gives individual and
mixed fleet operators the ability to equip their helicopters with the
best engine protection available,” said AFS Business Development
Director Robert Stenberg.  “AFS AS350/EC130 IBF-equipped aircraft can
also operate to the basic inlet performance charts thanks to no inlet
driven flight or gross weight restrictions, and pilots have the option
to use the sand filter performance charts when required.”

The AFS system features a sealed intake plenum that replaces the inlet
screens, sand filter/particle separator or alternate barrier filter.
Design of the IBF allows easy installation, utilizing the existing cowl
with no lateral cowl cuts required.  The filter and aft-facing bypass
system are flush with the upper surface of the EC130 or B3 dual
hydraulic cowling, utilizing an internal bypass plenum.  An intake
bypass capability is an important IBF feature that is lacking in most
traditional sand filters and particle separators.

All electrical components are easily accessed from inside the cowling
with minimal installation effort.  A simple compact cockpit switch,
common with existing AFS certified systems, allows indication and
activation of the bypass system.  And as with all AFS IBF’s, an
integral Filter Maintenance Aid allows for on-condition inspections
between established cleaning intervals, eliminating unnecessary service.

AFS is the industry leader in the design, development and manufacture
of high-performance engine IBF systems for commercial and military
propulsion systems.  The company manufactures certified IBF solutions
for the Eurocopter AS350 B/BA/B1/B2/B3, AS350’s with Soloy or Heli-Lynx
Honeywell engine conversions, EC130; AgustaWestland A119, AW119Ke; Bell
205A1, 206B, 407, 206L-3/4, 206L-1(C30); MD Helicopters MD 369H Series,
MD 500D/E/F and MD 900/902.  IBF systems for the Bell 430,
AgustaWestland AW109E/S and AW139 are in development.
